Naturalista, geólogo y profesor estadounidense de origen suizo. Después de estudiar en Suiza y Alemania, se trasladó a EE.UU. en 1846. Realizó un trabajo señero sobre la actividad glaciar y los peces extinguidos. Se hizo famoso por sus métodos docentes innovadores, que alentaban el aprendizaje mediante la observación directa de la naturaleza, y su período como profesor de zoología en la Universidad de Harvard revolucionó el estudio de la historia natural en EE.UU. Todos los profesores estadounidenses importantes de historia natural de fines del s. XIX fueron discípulos de Agassiz o de alguno de sus alumnos. Además, fue sobresaliente como administrador, promotor y captador de fondos en el ámbito científico. Toda su vida se opuso a la teoría de la evolución de
Charles Darwin. Su segunda esposa, Elizabeth Agassiz, cofundadora y primera presidenta del Radcliffe College, y su hijo, Alexander Agassiz, fueron también connotados naturalistas.
